Essay by Tibet Tiryaki
I see a lot of problems in this country for girls and women. Starts with getting raped, taking insults, getting judged by their look and not being able to get into jobs as easy as men because of not getting accepted at job interviews with the reason of their gender being female. Men do not expect the same skills they have from women for some reason. All of these problems are a matter of disparity. I will be mostly talking about disparity.
I see the biggest problem for girls as not being able to walk around most places in the country freely. At night, I live in a complex building and whenever I go out to walk or do other outdoor stuff, I mostly see boys. I think this has to do with girls not being able to go out freely because their clothes are too tight for some people so they judge them by their look. They can not walk freely, they can not dress freely, they can not speak freely, sometimes they even can not stand freely. Because some creep comes near them and starts talking inappropriate nonsense. For some reason, many insults and bad words are said over the female body in Turkey. It is highly inappropriate. Especially if the insult is against a woman.
Let’s take our country’s history at hand. In the history of Turkey, which is Ottoman Empire. Women had fortunes, they were able to rule the reign when the monarch was absent. They were respected by everyone. Nowadays there are so few women CEOs at companies. No respect to most women, they are left behind by men.
Now let’s talk about gender inequality in workplaces. Of course some jobs require more men employees or more women employees. But in a job where men and women employees can work together, well... they should work together with the same salary and the same respect right? Sometimes that is not how it is in this country. I directly asked my parent’s friends about their salary. Then I compared those people who had a common walk of life. Turns out that usually men take more salary from their jobs.
Job interviews are one of those uneven situations too. In a job interview, let’s think of two people. One of them is a man who is single, living close to the workplace and does his job as expected from the company. Then let’s put the same features for the woman too. In most scenarios the man has a higher chance of getting accepted into this particular job. You may ask why? The boss may be looking for male workers because he finds men more adequate. Or maybe the boss hates women. Or the boss may accept both workers into the job, but he may give less salary to the woman worker. This was another imparity for women.
For the last challenge that females face, let’s take it to how some people live in their houses. Some men prefer to drop the house work and kitchen work to women. While men sit on their comfy couches, women do the house work like slaves. Of course this is not a valid problem for every couple who lives together. But there are a lot of these-like people and it makes me really sad to see those women work their hands of like that when the men just sit on the couch.
These are the things I think about gender disparity and I hope for a better future for every woman in this country and of course more respect.
